SHINeS: Space and High-Irradiance Near-Sun Simulator
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present SHINeS, a space simulator which can be used to replicate the thermal environment in immediate neighborhood of Sun down heliocentric distance r ∼ 0.06 au. The system consists three main parts: solar was designed and constructed in-house, vacuum chamber, probing recording equipment needed monitor experimental procedures. Our motivation for building this study effect intense radiation on surfaces asteroids when their perihelion distances become smaller than semi-major axis orbit Mercury. Comparisons between observational data recent size-frequency models population near-Earth suggest that are super-catastrophically destroyed they approach Sun. Whereas current agnostic about disruption mechanism, SHINeS developed mechanism or mechanisms responsible. can, however, other applications need effects high natural artificial objects.

How the Sun Shines
What makes the sun shine? How does the sun produce the vast amount of energy necessary to support life on earth? These questions challenged scientists for a hundred and fifty years, beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century. Theoretical physicists battled geologists and evolutionary biologists in a heated controversy over who had the correct answer. Why was there so much fuss about this...

No Institute Given The Space Simulator is a 294-processor Beowulf cluster with theoretical peak performance just below 1.5 Teraflop/s. It is based on the Shuttle XPC SS51G mini chassis. Each node consists of a 2.53 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1 Gb of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM, an 80 Gbyte Maxtor hard drive, and a 3Com 3C996B-T gigabit ethernet card. The network is made up of a Foundry FastIron 1500 and 80...
متن کاملOptimal Sunshade Configurations for Space-Based Geoengineering near the Sun-Earth L1 Point
Within the context of anthropogenic climate change, but also considering the Earth's natural climate variability, this paper explores the speculative possibility of large-scale active control of the Earth's radiative forcing. In particular, the paper revisits the concept of deploying a large sunshade or occulting disk at a static position near the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrange equilibrium point. Among ...
متن کاملHigh-frequency irradiance fluctuations and geographic smoothing
Using six San Diego solar resource stations, clear-sky indices at 1-sec resolution were computed for one site and for the average of six sites separated by less than 3 km to estimate the smoothing of aggregated power output due to geographic dispersion in a distribution feeder. Ramp rate (RR) analysis was conducted on the 1-sec timeseries, including moving averages to simulate a large PV plant ...
متن کاملMonte Carlo radiative transfer simulation for the near-ocean-surface high-resolution downwelling irradiance statistics
We present a numerical study of the near-surface underwater solar light statistics using the state-ofthe-art Monte Carlo radiative transfer (RT) simulations in the coupled atmosphere-ocean system. Advanced variance-reduction techniques and full program parallelization are utilized so that the model is able to simulate the light field fluctuations with high spatial [Oð10−3 mmÞ] and temporal [Oð1...
